The Challengee

Local government and planning authorities are at the forefront of dealing with impacts resulting from predicted changes in climate. Working in Partnership, the City of Perth, the City of Vincent and Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA) Central commissioned an investigation into the key impacts of projected changes in climate.

Consultants AdaptiveFutures, working in conjunction with specialist engineering Consultants Damara WA, completed the two project phases. The project aims to better understand the impacts of climate change in the Project area, and to identify and assess the risks posed by climate change to buildings (existing and future) and their users. Identifying and understanding a potential adaptation process was a key part of phase 2.

A key strength of the methodology applied was the extensive stakeholder engagement in the workshop process. An inter-agency Reference Group was also formed in early Project planning stages and provided information about the impacts of climate change to inform the risk assessment process. Spatial mapping tools (Geographic Information Systems and Google Earth) were used during stakeholder workshops to identify hotspots for the various risks identified.
