The Challenge

How can the technical aspects of a complex, multi-year climate change adaptation project be implemented to meet the adaptation challenges of a highly vulnerable coastal system?

The Drini-Mati River Deltas in Albania were identified as an area particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, given the nature of the environment, and infrastructure in surrounding areas. The Albanian UNDP-GEF National Communication Support Unit (NCSU), UNDP CO, Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Water Administration, Institute of Hydrometeorology, Regional Environmental Center are working with the local community to ensure resilience of the key ecosystems and livelihoods to climate change.

The project involves a combination of technical and institutional capacity development, the assessment of potential impacts and selection of on-the ground adaptation measures and advice on the  modification of existing protected area network planning and coverage, and other landscape-wide adaptation policy measures.
