The Challenge

How can potential future climate change risks be proactively managed by Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA)?

Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) required support to start thinking about the potential climate change issues for their organisation.

With a unique governance structure, and clubs distributed across Australia, the team engaged to consider the management issues climate change and extreme weather event posed to SLSA and to develop a tailored Adaptation Road Map to ensure a proactive and coordinated management response.

The project involved completing a site review of all the clubs across Australia to assess potential vulnerability to infrastructure and service provision.

As part of the project, the wanted to consult with individual clubs. Given the number and location of clubs, and limited project time frames, the project team scripted, filmed and edited a short video presentation to ensure efficient use of project resources. The presentation was screened at a national meeting of club managers, and distributed to clubs as a call to support the project and contribute information that would lead to meaningful adaptation actions in the road map.

A technical Road Map for Adaptive Action was drafted as a key project outcome, along with a simplified summary report for stakeholders.
